Morning wood is fun when it happens. It’s also a sign of good sexual health. Chances are, if you’re having morning wood, you’re also having strong erections.

But if you’ve not had the pleasure of morning wood lately, it could be a danger signal that your cardiovascular system is not working right.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the connection between morning wood and cardiovascular disease and what you can do to pitch a morning tent more often. The goal is to strengthen both your sexual health and your cardiovascular function.

What Is Morning Wood?

Morning wood is the slang term for what scientists call nocturnal penile tumescence. This happens when a man wakes up in the morning or middle of the night with an erection.

Having an erotic dream does not trigger morning wood. Instead, it’s something that happens spontaneously without being sexually aroused or stimulated. It’s a sign that there’s enough blood flowing into the penis and that your penile nerves are healthy.

Can Morning Wood Happen At Night?

Nocturnal penile tumescence happens during your rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which happens several times during the night.(1) As you slip into a deeper sleep cycle, the erection often goes away, so you might not know whether you’re getting hard during your sleep.

However, people often wake up when a REM cycle is over, especially in the morning. This is why people think of these erections as morning wood.

A Warning Sign of Cardiovascular Disease

As you get older, you’re more likely to have less morning wood, or it may disappear completely. At the same time, as you get older, you’re more at risk of cardiovascular problems.

This is not a coincidence. Both cardio issues and nocturnal penile tumescence share a root cause, which is a problem with the lining of blood vessels known as the endothelium. Scientists call this endothelial dysfunction. To discover more about endothelial dysfunction’s role in blood flow to the penis, read our blog post “Does Every Guy Lose Blood Flow Below The Belt?”

Research shows that the absence of nocturnal penile tumescence comes before the development of cardiovascular concerns.(2) The lack of morning wood is also a red flag that full-blown erectile dysfunction is on the near horizon.

“I frequently tell my patients who are not experiencing morning wood and who are having erectile difficulties to get a full cardiovascular check-up,” says Paul Thompson, M.D., a urologist and surgeon with more than three decades of experience. “There’s definitely a connection between lack of nocturnal penile tumescence and heart problems, so you should take the absence of morning wood seriously.”

How To Bring Back Morning Erections

In addition to lifestyle measures to improve cardio health such as exercising and eating healthy, Dr. Thompson also suggests using two tools: a smart ring and an at-home acoustic soundwave therapy device.

“The smart ring applies anatomical pressure at the base of the penis, and helps trap blood during treatment or intimacy for firmer, stronger erections,” explains Dr. Thompson. “It works with the acoustic soundwave therapy device to improve blood flow, increasing delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the treatment zone.”

The acoustic shockwave therapy device delivers gentle soundwaves into penile tissue to support healthy blood flow. After using the device, men have reported a return of morning wood.

One verified buyer named Gerry said, “After the first treatment, I noticed a morning erection, which I haven’t had in quite awhile.”  Leonard, another verified buyer, remarked, “Morning wood is back!”

Get Reacquainted with Morning Erections

Morning erections are a sign that both your sexual health and cardiovascular function are in tip-top shape. If you’re not having morning wood, it could spell trouble for your erectile and cardiovascular function. You can restore your morning wood by making some lifestyle changes as well as using an at-home acoustic soundwave therapy device and a smart penis ring.
